Sydney Sweeney May Soon Take On a Role as a Mecha Pilot

It appears Sydney Sweeney is poised to take the helm of a giant robot in an upcoming film.

In an unexpected twist, Legendary Entertainment has announced plans to create a live-action movie based on the beloved animated science fiction series Gundam, with Sweeney currently in discussions to lead the cast.

Role Details Remain Under Wraps

As reported by Deadline, specifics about Sweeney’s character are still under wraps, and it’s also unclear which installment of the Gundam saga will serve as inspiration for the film’s storyline.

The Gundam series, a global phenomenon that began with the 1979 show Mobile Suit Gundam, revolves around pilots battling in massive robotic suits. It has since transformed into a massive franchise, raking in upwards of $600 million each year. The Gundam universe includes over 50 television series and films, alongside a plethora of novels, video games, and toys. Impressively, 90% of all plastic model sales in Japan come from this franchise alone.

Sweeney has been capturing a lot of media attention recently. She ended her long-term engagement with Jonathan Davino, whom she had been with since 2018 and was planning to marry soon. An insider revealed to PEOPLE that their relationship had been “rocky for a long time.” Fans of Sweeney can look forward to seeing more of her soon, as she will appear in the returning HBO drama Euphoria and in Ron Howard’s upcoming thriller Eden.

Changes in the Director’s Chair

Initially, Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for his work on Kong: Skull Island, was set to direct the Gundam adaptation when it was first announced back in 2021. However, the project has since passed to Jim Mickle, the showrunner of Sweet Tooth, who will now direct the science fiction film.

As of now, there are no additional details available about the live-action Gundam movie.
