John Swinney: Urgent Lessons Needed After Inquiry Reveals Deadly COVID Failures!

By Benjamin Harrison

Baroness Hallett’s latest report on the 2020 pandemic outlines critical failures and the resultant lockdowns.

John Swinney emphasized the need for learning from past mistakes after a Covid inquiry reported that inadequate planning by the Scottish Government contributed to over 10,000 deaths in Scotland.

The inquiry also criticized Nicola Sturgeon’s early claims that the virus could be completely eradicated, labeling such statements as “inappropriate” and “doomed to fail.”

Baroness Hallett’s report criticizes all four UK governments, with specific emphasis on the devolved administrations, highlighting their lack of individual preparedness and over-reliance on the central UK government’s strategies.

In response to the report, Swinney expressed on X, formerly Twitter, his ongoing condolences to those affected by Covid-19 and emphasized the importance of thoroughly considering the inquiry’s findings and recommendations.

Sturgeon regretted not implementing a lockdown in Scotland sooner than March 2020, acknowledging the initial underestimation of the virus’s severity.

The report highlights that the devolved administrations did not adequately escalate the crisis nor integrate Covid-19 considerations into their cabinet discussions, relying instead on plans designed for an influenza pandemic, which proved insufficient.

Additionally, the inquiry noted that while Sturgeon was a committed leader, her centralized decision-making sometimes excluded other ministers and advisors from the process.

Sturgeon defended her actions, insisting that her decisions during the pandemic were made without political bias and solely for the welfare of the public.

She spoke to reporters at Holyrood after the inquiry’s publication, stressing that her primary aim was the well-being of the people, despite acknowledging some mistakes.

The inquiry also touched on the detrimental impact of the strained relationship between Boris Johnson and Sturgeon during the critical periods of 2020 and 2021, suggesting it did not serve the UK public’s best interests.

Sturgeon firmly stated that her management of the pandemic was never influenced by political considerations and that she always acted with the intent to do what was best for the people.
