Arrest of Former ‘Family Matters’ Star Darius McCrary

Darius McCrary, known for his role as Eddie Winslow on the popular ABC sitcom “Family Matters,” has been apprehended. According to a report by PEOPLE, McCrary was arrested as a fugitive near the US-Mexico border and is currently being held without the possibility of bail on a felony charge.

The arrest took place on October 5, and as of now, McCrary has not been sentenced and remains ineligible for bail.

Details from his online booking indicate that he was detained under a “fugitive arrest” status. Additionally, the official website of the San Diego Court lists an ongoing criminal case with McCrary as the defendant. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, October 15. A representative for McCrary informed TMZ that the arrest warrant issued in Michigan was due to a missed court appearance related to his failure to meet child support obligations.

Legal Troubles and Divorce

McCrary’s arrest follows a contentious divorce with his ex-wife, Tammy Brawner, finalized in 2019. The couple originally filed for divorce in 2017. Upon settlement, McCrary was mandated to pay monthly child support of $1,366.

In addition to child support obligations, McCrary was also ordered to participate in alcohol and drug abuse treatment, as well as batterers’ intervention classes within a year following the divorce decree. He was granted monitored visitation rights with their daughter, Zoey, which would remain supervised until he attended 10 sessions of the mandated classes. Furthermore, he was required to complete six parenting classes if he wished to progress to unsupervised visitations.

During the divorce proceedings initiated by Brawner, she raised concerns regarding McCrary’s interactions with their daughter. She specifically alleged that in March 2018, McCrary had “partially dislocated” Zoey’s arm during an incident involving taking her to the bathroom, a claim that McCrary denied.

Career Highlights

McCrary is best recognized for his role in “Family Matters,” where he starred for all nine seasons of the show. He acted alongside Reginald VelJohnson and Jo Marie Payton, who played his on-screen parents. The show is celebrated as the second-longest-running sitcom featuring an African American cast.
