Christina Applegate Admitted to Hospital with Severe Kidney Infection
Christina Applegate, an actress celebrated for her Emmy-winning performances, was recently admitted to the hospital for a severe kidney infection. This health scare was so significant that she even recorded an episode of her podcast, MeSsy, from her hospital bed in Los Angeles. During the podcast, which she hosts alongside Jamie-Lynn Sigler of The Sopranos fame, Applegate shared that she was experiencing excruciating pain due to the infection, which had affected both of her kidneys.
The condition was so painful that Applegate described herself as being in agony, to the point of screaming from the discomfort. The actress, who received a Tony nomination and was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, first sensed something was amiss while on a family trip in Europe. Immediately upon her return, she proceeded directly from the airport to the hospital, insisting on being admitted for a thorough examination.
“I demanded to be admitted. I was determined to remain there until I got some answers. I requested every conceivable test, even those the doctors hadn’t thought of,” she explained.
Her situation worsened the following day when she awoke with intense, sharp pain on her right side, leading her to believe that her appendix might have ruptured. The pain, she noted, radiated from the back to the front of her body. “The pain was unbearable. I found myself screaming, and they had to conduct an emergency CT scan at 2 AM,” she recounted.
Applegate is now facing an extended stay in the hospital as she receives treatment that includes intravenous antibiotics. During her treatment, doctors speculated whether her symptoms might be related to a urinary tract infection, questioning her hygiene habits, which she humorously dismissed.
“I mean, how am I supposed to be back-wiping? I’m 53, for heaven’s sake,” she joked, adding that she maintains very high standards of personal hygiene.
Applegate is widely recognized for her role in Married… With Children, as well as her Emmy-winning guest appearance on Friends, and her Emmy-nominated performances in the sitcom Samantha Who? and the dark comedy-drama Dead to Me. Additionally, she was an original member of The Pussycat Dolls. Following her MS diagnosis, she retired from on-screen acting and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2022.
