Former Congressman Bobby Bright Passes Away: A Look Back at His Political Journey

By Emily Anderson

The Australian pop music scene has lost one of its iconic figures, Bobby Bright, who passed away at the age of 80.

Bright’s death occurred on July 18, in Melbourne, Australia.

He gained fame as one half of the popular duo Bobby & Laurie. Together, they released several hits that climbed the charts.

Among their successful singles were the 1964 top-10 song “I Belong with You” and the chart-topping “Hitch Hiker.” Their frequent appearances on Australian TV shows helped boost their popularity, leading to extensive national tours.

The duo’s popularity peaked with the success of “Hitch Hiker,” leading ABC to launch their 1966 TV show It’s a Gas, later renamed Dig We Must. The program, a half-hour sketch comedy series, often featured performances by Bobby and Laurie, either opening or closing each episode.

After the TV show did not succeed, Bobby and Laurie decided to pursue individual careers starting in 1967. They did reunite briefly in 1969 to cover Porter Wagoner’s “The Carroll County Accident,” but went their separate ways again in 1971.

Their final performance as a duo took place on June 1, 2002, at Kingston City Hall. Tragically, Laurie Allen passed away from a heart attack shortly after, on June 13 at the age of 60.

Until his own death, Bright continued to perform solo around Melbourne, Australia.
