Jameela Jamil Expresses Concern Over Serena Williams’ Endorsement of Weight Loss Drug
Jameela Jamil, renowned for her role in The Good Place, recently voiced her opinions following her public criticism of Serena Williams for promoting a weight loss medication.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Williams shared that she has been using a GLP-1 medication as part of her weight loss plan. To date, she has shed 31 pounds with its help.
“I feel great,” stated the celebrated tennis player. “I feel really good and healthy. I feel both physically and mentally light.”
Williams opened up about her difficulties with losing weight after the birth of her first daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017, and again after welcoming her second daughter, Adira River, in 2023.
“In my career, I have never looked for easy ways out and have always put in a lot of effort,” she commented. “Knowing what it takes to reach the top, it was incredibly frustrating to keep up all my efforts and still see no change in the scale or my body’s appearance.”
Williams also mentioned that she conducted thorough research on the GLP-1 medication before deciding to use it.
Shortly after Williams’ interview began circulating, Jamil did not hold back in her response. On an Instagram post dated August 24, she criticized the tennis legend.
“Serena Williams is promoting GLP-1s,” Jamil posted. “What really bothers me is that celebrities have access to healthcare professionals that most do not. These so-called ‘miracle’ weight loss medications are not only expensive but come with risks.”
Jamil also highlighted potential severe side effects from using the medication, such as pancreatitis, cancer, osteoporosis, severe malnutrition, and thyroid complications.
“You require medical support,” she emphasized. “If complications arise, not everyone has a billion dollars for treatment. That’s my issue with celebrities endorsing such serious drugs without fully disclosing the possible adverse effects.”
Jamil further pointed out that Williams’ husband, Alexis Ohanian, has financial ties to Ro, the company behind the medication that Serena was endorsing.
The following day, Jamil returned to social media to clarify her previous statements. She explained that her critique was not aimed at Williams’ personal choice to use the medication, but rather at the need for greater transparency in celebrity endorsements of weight loss drugs.
She also defended Williams’ autonomy over her own body, stating, “Her body has been subject to scrutiny for years. This isn’t about her or her decisions. It’s about the way celebrities market drugs and diet products, showcasing only the benefits without mentioning the potential downsides.”
In her concluding remarks, Jamil reiterated her main concern about how “privileged celebrities” promote medications with potentially harmful effects to their fans, many of whom may not have adequate health care coverage.
Jamil added, “I have a lot of love for Serena and my intention was never to attack or criticize her personally.”
