A 14-year-old has been sentenced to a five-year detention for the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Kory McCrimmon following a financial disagreement of £50.

After a heated argument in Glasgow’s Greenfield Park, the young assailant, involved in rival gang activities, fatally stabbed McCrimmon in the heart. This tragic event unfolded on May 31, with prior threats exchanged via social media heightening tensions.

The perpetrator, who was 13 at the time of the incident and is not identified due to legal protections for minors, appeared before the High Court in Glasgow, pleading guilty to culpable homicide under provocation.

During sentencing, Lord Mulholland condemned the act as “utter madness,” stemming from gang-related violence. The young offender will serve his sentence at the Kibble Secure Unit in Paisley, Renfrewshire.

The courtroom was packed with Kory’s family and friends, many of whom donned hoodies bearing his image.

In court, an emotional outburst was heard as one relative called the young offender a “monster” as he was escorted out. The court previously learned that the teenager had been under social work supervision for truancy.

Kory McCrimmon, once a player for the Easterhouse Football Academy, had no criminal record. Both he and his assailant were known to be from opposing factions within the city.

Initially, their interactions on Instagram were friendly, but the relationship soured over a dispute involving £50, leading to increasingly hostile exchanges.

The conflict escalated with both parties hurling threats. The assailant threatened to “chop up” McCrimmon and even kill him, while McCrimmon threatened to have his adversary shot, as both belonged to rival gangs.

On the day of the attack, gang-related threats continued to be exchanged on Instagram, with both sides preparing for a confrontation in Greenfield Park that evening.

That night, a large crowd, including boys and girls, some under the influence, gathered at the park. The assailant, as part of a group armed with various weapons, challenged McCrimmon and his group to a fight. When McCrimmon advanced towards the accused, who was armed with a knife, the young perpetrator fatally stabbed him in the chest.

Prosecutor Greg Farrell highlighted that even as the attack unfolded, there were pleas from the perpetrator’s brother urging him to stop. Emergency services quickly responded, but despite their efforts, McCrimmon succumbed to his injuries a few days later in the hospital.

The assailant also received medical attention for injuries sustained during the incident and was arrested in the same hospital where McCrimmon was taken. Initially arrested for attempted murder, he made no comments during police interviews.

In court, the defense portrayed the incident as a tragic loss of life, exacerbated by the young perpetrator’s personal turmoil following his father’s death. There was a cautious optimism expressed about his potential rehabilitation while in custody.

Lord Mulholland reflected on the serious consequences of the young offender’s actions, influenced heavily by the misuse of social media, which fueled the gang rivalry and violence. He emphasized the profound grief experienced by Kory’s family, describing their impact statements as “heartbreaking.”
