Following a medical emergency on board, a flight from Edinburgh to Spain was rerouted to London Stansted Airport.
Travelers on a flight departing from Edinburgh Airport destined for Spain found themselves unexpectedly delayed on the tarmac after their aircraft was rerouted due to a medical crisis.
The Ryanair FR5579 flight en route to Alicante had initially taken off from the Scottish capital at around 7:30 AM on Thursday, April 3.
Due to an incident involving a male passenger’s health on board, the flight made an unscheduled landing at London Stansted Airport shortly before 9 AM, as indicated by Flight Radar data.
According to our affiliate Edinburgh Live, it was a medical emergency that prompted the diversion. Nurses who happened to be among the passengers provided initial aid to the unwell man, followed by paramedics who entered the aircraft upon its landing at Stansted.
Others on the flight shared that they were kept waiting on the tarmac before the aircraft eventually continued its journey to Alicante, leaving Stansted Airport shortly before 11 AM.
Nicola Sinclair recounted, “We have been on the tarmac since just after 9 AM. A gentleman fell ill. Nurses on board attended to him but we had to make a detour to Stansted for paramedics to board. He was then taken off the plane for further medical treatment.”
She added, “Since we were not a scheduled flight at Stansted, we ended up at the end of the line for refueling. We are just making our way to the runway now. The incident occurred a few rows behind us near the back of the plane.”
A Ryanair spokesperson informed Edinburgh Live, “This flight from Edinburgh to Alicante on April 3 was diverted to London Stansted after a passenger became ill on board. The crew had arranged for medical personnel to meet the aircraft upon arrival at Stansted, who then attended to the passenger. The flight resumed its journey to Alicante later that morning.”
In a separate incident, Edinburgh Airport was in the news last month when Donald Trump’s private jet was seen landing in the city. Dubbed ‘Trump Force One’, the aircraft was transporting Trump’s son Eric, who was in Edinburgh on March 13 following vandalism at the US president’s Turnberry golf resort by pro-Palestine activists. A 33-year-old man has been charged in relation to the vandalism.”
It was later disclosed that Eric Trump had traveled for a ‘business meeting’ with First Minister John Swinney, whom he had previously criticized for endorsing Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.”
