A local resident provided crucial video evidence to police, prompting a search in a rugged area beneath high-end homes.
CCTV captured Scottish tourist Greg Monks leaping a wall following a night out, aiding Portuguese authorities in piecing together his final moments.
The 38-year-old was in the Algarve for a stag weekend with friends, vanishing on their first night out, Wednesday, May 28.
His remains were discovered in a deep gorge, far from his lodging, the following day.
Following an appeal by law enforcement and Greg’s relatives, a homeowner checked their security footage and found images of him.
Authorities, including K-9 units, were dispatched to a steep terrain below upscale residences in Cerro da Aguia, close to the popular Albufeira resort, after reviewing the video evidence.
Continued tributes were paid today to the plant mechanic from Glasgow, remembered as an “incredible person” by his heartbroken sister Jillian, after the grim discovery yesterday morning.
Portuguese police officially confirmed the discovery of Greg’s body in a statement released yesterday afternoon following initial reports in the local media.
An autopsy conducted today is expected to support the theory that his death was a tragic accident, possibly due to disorientation as he tried to return to his hotel after a long night of drinking, shortly after arriving in Albufeira for a five-day stag party.
A police source in Portugal highlighted today that the CCTV footage obtained from a local resident was crucial in the investigation.
Greg’s sister had requested residents in the Cerro da Águia area, west of Albufeira, to review footage from home security cameras and doorbells recorded between 2 am and 5 am on May 28, which led to the discovery of him last seen in the area of large villas.
The police insider explained, “The GNR police force had sought assistance from the Polícia Judiciaria, which confirmed yesterday that the missing man’s body had been located. They then received CCTV from one of the villas in Cerro da Aguia areas which showed him jumping over a wall from a neighboring property.”
“With that information, the search efforts were immediately redirected to the scrubland below the homes. Sniffer dogs previously deployed by the GNR were reintroduced to the area.”
“Once the dogs began their search around 11 am, they quickly led to a bush where the missing man’s body was found,” added the insider.
Another police source noted, “The ongoing investigation aims to clarify how he died. All signs so far suggest the tourist lost his bearings in unfamiliar territory while under the influence, inadvertently jumping over a wall into private property and then over another wall at the rear, not realizing it bordered a steep drop.”
Greg’s girlfriend Nicole Kelso, along with his parents, traveled to Albufeira after he was reported missing.
His sister Jillian, who led the public appeals for information on his whereabouts before his tragic demise, stated yesterday that his family was “truly heartbroken.”
She added, “Everyone who knew Greg knows how much he will be missed and what an amazing guy he was.”
Portuguese police have yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of his death, though officers have informally indicated they do not suspect foul play based on the post-mortem findings.
