Scottish Companies Penalized: HMRC Exposes Firms Intentionally Evading Taxes!

A takeaway owner in Perth and a store operator in Glasgow are among those fined for being labeled as ‘deliberate defaulters’ by tax authorities.

The latest round of penalties for tax evasion in Scotland has been issued by HMRC, targeting businesses that deliberately avoided paying dues.

Among those named are two specific businesses—a takeaway in Perth and a convenience store in Glasgow—highlighted in a list that includes several other UK companies.

HM Revenue and Customs have explained that publishing these names serves as a stringent measure against a small fraction of businesses that choose not to fulfill their tax responsibilities.

Gurcharan Singh, who runs the ‘Hot & Spicy’ takeaway on Crieff Road in Perth, faces a heavy penalty of £77,520.36.

An HMRC investigation discovered that Singh had underpaid taxes amounting to £131,949.63 over an 11-year stretch from April 2010 to April 2021.

Similarly, Day to Day Scotland Ltd, located on Hope Street in Glasgow, has been fined £79,055.40 for failing to pay £131,759 in taxes from January 2020 to June 2023.

HMRC states that the list includes individuals and businesses that have made deliberate mistakes or failed to comply with their tax obligations.

The aim of making these names public is to deter tax evasion and motivate defaulters to settle their dues with HMRC.

Kevin Hubbard, HMRC’s Director of Individuals and Small Business Compliance, remarked, “While the vast majority comply with their tax obligations, we employ various strategies to deal with those who do not. This includes publicizing the names of those who have intentionally avoided paying taxes to influence behavior and encourage engagement with HMRC.”

The Record has attempted to reach the businesses mentioned for comments.

Recently, it was disclosed that over 4,000 of the UK’s largest tax defaulters have been asked to pay back more than £1.5 billion by HMRC since the enforcement began in 2015.

From the list, over 21% belong to the hospitality sector, including eateries and cafes, while around 19% are from the construction and trades sectors, such as plumbing and plastering.
