John Brenkus, known for co-founding and hosting the Emmy-awarded show Sports Science, has passed away at the age of 54 following a struggle with depression. His death occurred on Saturday.
Confirmation of his death was announced via his X (formerly known as Twitter) account on Sunday. The post expressed deep sorrow, stating, “It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away.”
The announcement further detailed his professional background and personal challenges. “John was not only the co-founder of Base Productions and founder of Brinx.TV but also co-created and hosted Sports Science, a show that won six Emmy awards. He had been fighting depression,” the statement elaborated. It also marked the date of his passing as May 31, 2025.
The message from his loved ones concluded with a request for privacy during this painful time and a plea for individuals facing similar struggles to seek help.
John Brenkus’ Contributions to Sports and Media
Sports Science first debuted on Fox Sports in 2007 and later transitioned to ESPN. The show, hosted by Brenkus, was celebrated for its innovative approach to debunking widespread myths and uncovering truths in sports through advanced technology. It meticulously analyzed different aspects such as momentum, friction, and gravity to explain sports phenomena, as per its ESPN synopsis.
Brenkus was vocal about his mental health issues. In a poignant 2023 interview with ex-NFL star Marcellus Wiley, he recounted a critical moment when he nearly attempted suicide but was saved by his dog, Zepplin, who distracted him by tugging at his pants. This incident led him to reach out for help. “I was in a suicidal funk, questioning my actions. That’s when I grabbed my phone, called my mom, and confessed that I was mentally lost,” Brenkus recalled. He described the intense struggle that followed as he fought to overcome his mental health challenges.
Following the announcement of his death, Marcellus Wiley was among the many who expressed their grief, posting a tribute on X: “RIP @johnbrenkus_.”
