“They couldn’t speak, they couldn’t defend themselves, and they couldn’t tell us as parents that something had happened to them. They were totally helpless, and Roksana preyed upon them.”
Roksana Lecka, a 22-year-old nursery worker who inflicted abuse on children in her charge, has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Her employment last year at Riverside Nursery, a prestigious Montessori facility in Twickenham Green, southwest London, marked the beginning of a nightmarish period for numerous families. The nursery has not operated since.
Lecka exploited her role to commit appalling acts of violence against the children, some of whom were only ten months old and unable to articulate their suffering. Her tenure at the nursery, where fees approached £2,000 a month, lasted a mere five months.
During this short period, she managed to assault 21 young children, cunningly hiding her actions from her coworkers. It was only when suspicions were raised that CCTV footage revealed Lecka’s brutal actions—kicking, punching, and scratching her victims, shocking onlookers during her trial at Kingston Crown Court.
Authorities disclosed that Lecka had harmed children at two different nurseries from October 2023 to June 2024. She eventually admitted to seven counts of child cruelty at one previous nursery in Hounslow and Riverside, among other locations.
It took the jury nearly ten hours to find her guilty on 14 out of 17 charges of child cruelty, while she was acquitted of three at her trial. Despite her criminal activities, Lecka maintained a facade of normalcy, frequently appearing in cheerful family photos on social media and assisting her mother with the care of her younger siblings.
Even after her arrest, Lecka’s mother continued to defend her, downplaying the severity of her daughter’s actions. Lecka herself claimed that her love for her siblings, whom she helped raise, inspired her to work at the nursery, despite having no formal qualifications.
At her trial, the court was shown distressing video evidence of Lecka’s cruelty, including footage where she kicked a little boy multiple times and pinched, punched, and mistreated other children. The prosecutor pointed out how Lecka was cautious of being observed by other staff members during these assaults.
During the sentencing, a victim’s mother directly addressed Lecka in court, emphasizing the innocence and vulnerability of the children and how defenseless they were against Lecka’s actions.
Some parents are now suing the education group that owns the nursery, shocked that such abuse could continue under their management. One parent voiced that the incident had shattered her trust and made her constantly fearful for her child’s well-being.
Footage of Lecka during her arrest shows her responding indifferently to the charges, and during police interviews, she remained detached, often replying with “no comment” even when confronted with evidence of her crimes.
Lecka’s defense claimed her memory was impaired by her cannabis use, which she said made her forget her actions, a claim she reiterated during her trial. Despite her assertions, the evidence of her deliberate cruelty was overwhelming.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Lecka has formed a close relationship with another infamous inmate, reflecting a disturbing lack of remorse for her actions. Her behavior in prison, as described by fellow inmates and observed by authorities, suggests a deep-seated disregard for the gravity of her crimes.
The nursery involved expressed profound regret over the incidents, emphasizing their commitment to creating a secure and nurturing environment for children, and affirmed their cooperation in the investigation that led to Lecka’s arrest.
