Michael Riley, charged with the murder of key members of the Lyons criminal organization, Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons, made a court appearance today regarding the fatal shootings at a bar in Spain.

Michael Riley was present via a video call at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court concerning the slayings of these notorious crime figures, who were killed after the Champions League final.

He is facing three counts related to the crime which occurred at Monaghans Irish Bar in Fuengirola, a city on the Costa del Sol, on the night of Saturday, May 31, 2025.

The 44-year-old from Liverpool, Merseyside, is accused of two counts of murder and one count of firearm possession following the incident which led to the deaths of Monaghan, aged 43, and Lyons, aged 46.

He participated in the proceedings from HMP Wandsworth today, Thursday, June 19, 2025, where he verified his identity and birth date during the brief session, as reported by the BBC.

Due to issues with the video link, the hearing was postponed until the next day, Friday, June 20, 2025, to allow for his physical presence in court.

Riley’s arrest was carried out by the Merseyside Police last Friday, pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. His full extradition hearing is anticipated to occur later this year.

The Lyons criminal family has been embroiled in a deadly feud with the rival Daniel gang for over two decades, originating from a drug theft at a Glasgow safe house back in 2001.

A senior Spanish police official reported that the killings of Monaghan and Lyons are linked to this ongoing feud, asserting that Riley is affiliated with the Daniel gang.

However, Scottish police, investigating the long-standing rivalry between these crime groups, indicated that the murders might not be connected to the feud or linked to the campaign against the Daniel gang led by Lyons associate Ross McGill.

The Dubai-based former Rangers ultra, known as ‘Miami’ and previously leading the Union Bears fan group, has recently targeted the Daniel gang and its affiliates with violent attacks in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and surrounding areas. These incidents are currently under investigation by Police Scotland as part of Operation Portaledge.

Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Houston stated earlier: “We have been aiding Spanish colleagues with their investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola. At present, there is no evidence suggesting that these killings are connected with the recent criminal activities in Scotland being probed as part of Operation Portaledge.”

“While we acknowledge the statement from Spanish Police, we cannot comment on an ongoing investigation in another jurisdiction; however, we currently have no evidence indicating that the incident was orchestrated from Scotland. We are aware of the arrest made in Merseyside and will continue to support our Spanish counterparts as necessary.”
