Olly Alexander Parts Ways with Polydor Records

Olly Alexander, a well-known British artist, has recently faced a significant career challenge after a less than stellar performance at this year’s Eurovision contest. He has confirmed that his decade-long association with Polydor Records has come to an end.

In response to rumors about his status with the label, Alexander explained on social media: “I’m not being dropped; my contract simply isn’t being renewed. It’s actually a good thing. I’ve been stuck in a rather unfavorable contract for the last ten years, so it’s time for a change. Nevertheless, I plan to continue making music.”

Eurovision Setback and Recent Music Struggles

Alexander’s recent career difficulties were accentuated by his performance at the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden. His song “Dizzy” ended up in 18th place, failing to secure any points from the public and receiving only 46 points from the jury. This followed the release of his latest solo album, Polari, which debuted at number 17 on the UK music charts—a first for his albums not to break into the Top Five. Additionally, the album did not produce any Top 40 singles, according to the Daily Mail.

He originally joined Polydor in 2014 as a member of the band Years & Years. The band saw considerable success with their debut album Communion, which included popular tracks like “King,” “Shine,” “Desire,” and “Eyes Shut.” After bandmates Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Turkmen left, Alexander continued with Polydor as a solo artist.

Navigating Creative and Personal Challenges

In a discussion with Attitude magazine in February, Alexander shared the difficulties he has faced in the industry regarding his sexual expression. He noted that his popularity was higher when he was in a band with two heterosexual members, indicating some industry resistance to his solo creative direction. Reflecting on his experiences, he said, “When the label first saw the visuals for Palo Santo, Years & Years’ second album, their reaction was less than enthusiastic.”

Despite demonstrating his commercial success, Alexander felt that his creative choices were often met with considerable pushback. “Even after our first album sold millions and I had made a lot of money for my record label, the resistance to my creative decisions was intense… It seemed like they thought I was jeopardizing my own marketability. But I decided to go ahead with my vision,” he remarked.

Expanding Horizons in Acting

Apart from his music career, Alexander has also received acclaim for his acting, notably in the 2021 Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin. He has shown interest in further pursuing acting, dreaming of working with iconic actors such as Kirsten Dunst. He expressed his admiration by saying, “I would love to be in a movie with Kirsten Dunst. I could then say, ‘OMG Kirsten Dunst, you are an icon.'”
