Hannah Berner vividly remembers the time she inadvertently violated a fundamental “humanity” code during a live performance.
During her Oct. 27 guest appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 34-year-old comedian and former Summer House cast member shared an embarrassing incident that happened while she was on stage.
Berner explained, “I tend to speak whatever pops into my head, and there was this instance where I saw a woman in a babydoll dress holding her stomach. I ended up doing the one thing you’re absolutely not supposed to do.”
Kelly Clarkson reacted with a shocked “No!” as Berner recounted, “It’s like a cardinal rule of humanity not to do it. And right when I said, ‘Are you preg—,’ the whole audience gasped, ‘No.'”
“And she just said, ‘No,'” Berner continued. “You know the feeling when your head starts burning with embarrassment. For the rest of my act, I kept replaying it in my mind, thinking, ‘Was it as terrible as I thought? Yeah, it was really that bad.’
Defending her blunder, Berner mentioned to Clarkson that the woman’s glowing skin misled her, humorously adding, “It’s like she was asking for it… She looked absolutely stunning! Sometimes, you gamble for a laugh and it works.”
In a Nov. 10 interview with PAPER, Berner shared that she only discovered her passion for comedy in her late 20s. “I had plenty of experiences to poke fun at by then,” she remarked. She also mentioned that her material often touches on personal insecurities and issues that she feels should not concern her.
The star of Giggly Squad admitted that touring solo with her stand-up routine can feel isolating, yet it remains a deeply rewarding experience. “It’s quite surreal to perform sketches and stories that originated in my notes app and are now entertaining entire theaters,” she said.
Berner expressed her love for stand-up comedy, appreciating the space it offers and the break from her phone for an entire hour. She also hinted at future career aspirations, stating, “I get bored quickly, so I’ve started auditioning. I don’t like to be pigeonholed, so perhaps acting will be my next venture.”
