Benz Hui, Esteemed Hong Kong Actor, Passes Away at 76
The renowned Hong Kong actor Benz Hui has passed away at the age of 76. Known affectionately as the “King of Supporting Actors,” Hui succumbed to cancer last month in a hospital, surrounded by his loved ones.
Although he never reached the status of a global celebrity, Hui was a familiar face in Hong Kong cinema, with a prolific career spanning over 200 roles in various films and television series.
He earned his stage name “Benz Hui” as a result of his habit of driving a Mercedes Benz to work, which led his colleagues to nickname him after the car.
Glorious Career Spanning Five Decades
From the 1970s through the early 1990s, Hui’s career flourished, particularly through his work with the Asian broadcasting giant TVB, which saw him star in numerous popular television series. One of his most notable roles was in the crime drama series Line Walker, and its subsequent film adaptation. In this series, spanning from 2014 to 2020, he portrayed the character Foon Hei Gor, a police officer who becomes entangled in criminal activities.
Last Tuesday, Hui’s 28-year-old daughter shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, celebrating her father’s life and legacy.
“Dad, today is your birthday,” she wrote in Chinese. “The recent days have been incredibly surreal. I hope now you can wander freely and go wherever you wish.”
She expressed her gratitude towards family, friends, and fans for their overwhelming support following her father’s passing. “Please forgive me for not being able to express my thanks to each of you personally, but please know that every gesture of kindness is held close to my heart,” she continued in her post. She also mentioned that her father’s social media accounts would be maintained to continue sharing memories and uphold his legacy of spreading joy.
Switching to English, she added, “Life will never be the same without you, but I’ll do my best to be strong because of you. I miss you and love you endlessly.”
Hui leaves behind his daughter and his wife, who both survive him.
The loss of Benz Hui marks the end of an era for Hong Kong cinema, but his vast body of work ensures that his legacy will not be forgotten.
