Landslide Shuts Down A83 Rest and Be Thankful: Flood Warnings Issued!

By Benjamin Harrison

The A815 has been blocked close to its intersection with the A83 at Cairndow, nearby the Rest and Be Thankful in Argyll and Bute due to a landslide.

A key road near Rest and Be Thankful has been shut down due to a landslide as the nation faces another day of flood warnings in various areas because of persistent heavy rainfall and melting snow. Consequently, the Dunoon section of the A815 and the A83 has been closed in both directions.

This area has experienced several landslides in recent times. A photograph released by the Argyll and Bute Council and circulated on social media shows a large accumulation of mud, soil, and debris obstructing the frosty road, accompanied by downed branches.

Police Scotland has implemented detours via the B839 and B828, and motorists are advised to steer clear of the area. Another alternative route is via the A815 from Cairndow to Strachur/Dunoon.

A council spokesperson added: “The Diversion Route is via some single track roads with passing places. Drivers of larger vehicles are advised to take care when using this diversion.”

The A815 will be further assessed by specialist engineers today and operations to clear the landslip will continue, the spokesperson confirmed. Further updates will be provided on the council website as soon as available.

As of Monday morning, there were 19 Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) flood warnings and 12 flood alerts in place around the country. Dalry and Kilwinning in North Ayrshire, Aberfoyle in Stirling, Newton Stewart and Whitesands in Dumfries and Galloway, the Churchill Barriers in Orkney, Carse of Lennoch to Lochlane, Glen Lyon and Crieff to Innerpeffray in Tayside, are all under warnings.
