Courtney Thorne-Smith Ends 18-Year Marriage

Courtney Thorne-Smith, known for her role in “Melrose Place,” has decided to end her marriage of 18 years with Roger Fishman. The 57-year-old actress filed for divorce this past Tuesday, nearly four years after their separation in September 2021, according to documents obtained from a court filing by PEOPLE.

The legal papers, which Thorne-Smith filed in Los Angeles Superior Court herself without legal representation, state “irreconcilable differences” as the cause of the dissolution of their marriage. Within the filing, the “Ally McBeal” actress requested joint legal custody of their 17-year-old son, Jacob Emerson, and also asked the court to eliminate any possibility of spousal support for either party.

Details of Thorne-Smith’s Personal Life and Previous Relationships

Thorne-Smith and Fishman, who works as a talent agent, were initially married in a private ceremony at her home on the first day of 2007. The couple welcomed their son in January of the following year, 2008.

This was Thorne-Smith’s second marriage; her first was to geneticist Andrew Conrad. The pair married in June 2000 but went their separate ways shortly thereafter in January 2001. In addition to her marriages, Thorne-Smith had a notable relationship with her “Melrose Place” co-star Andrew Shue during the early 1990s. The two, who played Alison Parker and Billy Campbell on the popular Fox series, started dating soon after the show premiered in 1992. Thorne-Smith shared with PEOPLE her fond memories of Shue, particularly recalling a scene where he was dancing, which she found utterly charming.

She reflected on this relationship in an August 2024 episode of her podcast “Still the Place,” describing their breakup as “shockingly not weird,” though admitting there were challenging times. “Our relationship helped us support each other through a very intense period. The show was receiving a great deal of attention, and dealing with the ‘Fox celebrity craziness’ was something we both helped each other through,” she explained.
