Zubeen Garg, a celebrated Indian singer, has passed away at the age of 52.
Over the span of his 33-year career, Garg distinguished himself as a versatile musician, composer, actor, and director, delivering performances in more than 40 languages. He was scheduled to appear at the North East India Festival in Singapore this past weekend, but his life was tragically cut short due to complications from a scuba diving accident that led to his drowning.
Best recognized for his contributions to pop and rock music, Garg achieved global recognition with his hit song “Ya Ali” from the 2006 Bollywood film Gangster.
Garg was born in 1972 in the Indian state of Meghalaya. He launched his first album, Anamika, at the age of 19 in 1992. Despite humble beginnings, he did not foresee the international acclaim his career would later garner. Reflecting on the success of “Ya Ali” during a 2012 television interview, he expressed his astonishment, noting, “I didn’t know it would become so big. It was good for me, too.”
Recently, hundreds of thousands of his fans congregated in Guwahati City, Assam, to pay their respects. Garg was honored at his funeral with state honors, including a 21-gun salute. Following his death, Assam observed three days of mourning, with numerous notable figures and politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paying tribute to his legacy.
