The team has issued penalties after previously warning against violent conduct
In a decisive action, Celtic FC has imposed a three-game ban on the Green Brigade following a violent clash involving police officers during a recent match against Falkirk.
The reigning Premiership champions have activated a previously suspended ban against their most notorious fan group, which will take effect immediately for the upcoming three home games.
The club expressed its frustration, stating that approximately “100 individuals from the Green Brigade group engaged in a planned and deliberate effort” to interfere with the apprehension of a person involved in an altercation with a staff member, resulting in police and security staff facing aggressive resistance.
The relationship between the club and the Green Brigade has been strained due to various issues at games, political demonstrations, and disagreements regarding club management. The Ultras have been vocal in their criticism, frequently calling for the removal of the current club leaders with chants and banners demanding to “Sack the Board”.
Celtic has taken a proactive stance by detailing the alarming events that transpired inside Celtic Park. According to a club statement, the incident occurred on Wednesday, October 29, when a club employee was assaulted by an individual during a routine ticket inspection in the rail seating area. This assault prompted the intervention of two police officers who tried to arrest the assailant.
In response, a large contingent from the Green Brigade orchestrated a rescue of the assailant. The mob, many of whom concealed their identities with hoods and masks, verbally and physically assaulted the steward and police officers, creating a potentially dangerous situation where an officer was nearly pulled to the ground and trampled.
The statement highlighted, “This violent and threatening behavior is entirely unacceptable.” In July, due to repeated serious safety and security breaches, the club had warned that any future incidents would result in a suspension. The club hoped the suspended sanction would encourage the group to cooperate and maintain a safe and orderly environment in the Rail Seating Section.
As a consequence of their latest actions, the club confirmed that the sanction would now be enforced starting this weekend. In communications to the Green Brigade and season ticket holders, the club reiterated its position, emphasizing the gravity of the misconduct.
“It is simply unacceptable for our staff and police to be assaulted in this manner. This was a severe and violent occurrence that must be addressed decisively,” the club stated. “Celtic Park is no place for such behavior, and we must act in the best interest and safety of everyone attending our games.”
