Daniel Dae Kim: A Versatile Career and New Aspirations
Daniel Dae Kim, known for his roles in a variety of television genres from medical dramas to complex science fiction, has expressed a yearning to explore a character type he has yet to portray. At 57, Kim continues to expand his impressive career, currently taking on both starring and producing roles in the action-packed series Butterfly available on Prime Video.
In a recent conversation with PEOPLE magazine, Kim revealed his interest in stepping into a new genre. “I would love to be a romantic lead,” Kim disclosed. He humorously noted his age might better suit roles that are more man-meets-woman than boy-meets-girl.
A Change in Representation
Kim’s motivation for wanting to become a romantic lead stems from the historical portrayal of Asian men in Hollywood. He highlighted the traditional casting norms, where Asian men rarely end up with the leading lady. “Traditionally in America, someone who looks like me does not get the girl,” he remarked. Kim is encouraged by the evolving landscape of film and television that is beginning to embrace more diverse representations of romance.
“I’m so glad to see that changing. I really hope that’s a barrier that not only our community breaks, but one that I get to participate in breaking,” Kim added, illustrating his desire to be part of this transformative movement in the industry.
Pioneering Achievements and Future Goals
Kim has already broken significant barriers in his career. Earlier in the year, he was the first Asian actor to receive a Tony Award nomination for Best Lead Actor for his performance in the Broadway play Yellow Face. Reflecting on his nomination, Kim described it as a moment that brought his career full circle, considering his beginnings on the theatrical stage at a time when diverse representation was far less prevalent.
“To be nominated for [best lead actor] is a dream come true and a really good metaphor for where we are culturally,” he shared. While celebrating this milestone, Kim acknowledges that there is still progress to be made. He highlighted the importance of continuing to push boundaries, not just for himself but for broader cultural recognition and acceptance. “The next step that we have to take, and not just for me, but for all of us, is for an Asian man to win that category,” he stated.
Currently, audiences can watch Kim in action in Butterfly, which is available for streaming on Prime Video.
