Police were dispatched following reports of a person in distress, resulting in an individual being “trapped” and subsequently airlifted to a hospital on Friday afternoon.
A pedestrian was reportedly struck by a tram in Edinburgh, triggering a significant emergency response.
The emergency was reported around 1:30 PM on Friday when first responders including police, fire services, and paramedics rushed to Constitution Street due to reports of a person being hit by the tram.
According to the BBC, the victim was hit by the tram, and EdinburghLive reported unconfirmed local accounts suggesting the individual was ‘trapped’ near The Shore tram stop.
Police Scotland verified that a 66-year-old man was transported to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh following the incident, which they described as a “concern for a person.”
The severity of the man’s injuries and his current condition in the hospital remain unknown.
The incident caused trams to be unable to service the bustling street in Leith while emergency teams attended to the situation.
The area was closed off for approximately two hours this afternoon following the distressing event.
An air ambulance was observed landing in Leith Links at around 2:30 PM.
It then proceeded to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, landing just before 3 PM.
Tram services were halted for about two hours before the road was reopened shortly after 3 PM.
Edinburgh Trams announced that their services were operating on a partial route due to a “medical incident”. They also stated that their staff assisted emergency responders at the scene.
