‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Actor James Pickens Jr. Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

James Pickens Jr., famed for his role as Dr. Richard Webber on the popular ABC show Grey’s Anatomy, has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

At 71 years old, the veteran actor disclosed his health condition during an interview with Black Health Matters, mentioning that prostate cancer is a common ailment in his family.

“Receiving this kind of news is never easy, but prostate cancer is something that has affected many in my family,” Pickens said to the publication. “My father battled it, as did many of his brothers. It would have been more shocking if I had not developed it,” he added.

Pickens further shared, “I have a first cousin who’s 90 and still alive; he had it too. His son and a few of his brothers also dealt with this disease. To my knowledge, none of them died from it.”

Thanks to Pickens’ proactive approach to his health, his cancer was detected very early. He started undergoing PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests at the age of 41, which played a crucial role in the early detection of his condition.

Following a recent PSA test that raised concerns, Pickens’ doctor recommended an MRI. The scan flagged something suspicious in his prostate, which a subsequent biopsy confirmed to be a tumor. Fortunately, a PET scan showed that the cancer was localized, affecting only one area of the prostate.

“My urologist emphasized how my vigilance with health screenings worked in my favor,” Pickens recounted. “‘Your commitment to regular testing allowed us to catch the cancer early,’ he told me.”

The beloved Grey’s Anatomy star faced a decision between radiation therapy and surgery. Opting for the latter, Pickens underwent a laparoscopic radical prostatectomy.

“We discovered the cancer early, which made surgery a viable and effective option,” Pickens explained. “The type of cancer I have is quite rare, so the medical team preferred to proceed with caution. It was so rare, in fact, they hadn’t encountered another case detected as early as mine.”

On a recent update via X (formerly Twitter), Pickens’ daughter, actress Gavyn Pickens, reassured fans that her father was recovering well post-surgery. “He’s doing great now. We’re just focusing on monitoring, but he’s in good spirits and recovering,” she shared.

Throughout his ordeal, Pickens expressed a desire to break down the barriers and stigma associated with discussing men’s health issues, particularly among Black men, and the topic of prostate cancer.
