Kate Middleton shares rare singing moment with Princess Charlotte at Christmas service

The Christmas celebration held extra meaning for the royal household this year.

On Dec. 5, the Princess of Wales put on her fifth annual Christmas carol service and surprised the congregation by joining her daughter, Princess Charlotte, for an impromptu piano duet.

According to PEOPLE, the event — staged at Westminster Abbey and later shown on the UK’s ITV on Dec. 24 at 2:25 p.m. ET — featured the mother-daughter pair at the piano performing “Holm Sound,” a piece by composer Erland Cooper. Present for the service were other members of the immediate family, including the Prince of Wales and their sons, Prince George, 12, and Prince Louis, 7.

The moment felt particularly poignant because several other relatives were in attendance: Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh; Zara Tindall and her husband Mike Tindall; Kate’s parents, Carole and Michael Middleton; and her brother James Middleton alongside his wife, Alizée Thevenet. In the run-up to the broadcast, Kensington Palace shared a brief clip of the piano moment on Instagram, teasing it simply as “A special duet…”

In a video clip posted to her Instagram account, the Princess of Wales reflected on the meaning of the season, speaking about how Christmas is ultimately about love showing itself in ordinary, human ways — not necessarily through grand or dramatic gestures, but in small deeds: listening, offering comfort, having a kind conversation, lending a hand, and simply being present. She emphasized that these modest acts of care, though they may seem minor, weave together into the richer fabric of our shared lives.

This performance continued a musical thread in Catherine’s public life. She first surprised many by revealing her piano ability during the inaugural “Together at Christmas” carol service in 2021, when she accompanied Scottish singer-songwriter Tom Walker on the piano for his song “For Those Who Can’t Be Here.” As for Princess Charlotte, the Princess of Wales has previously mentioned that her daughter is taking piano lessons. During the 2023 Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall, Kate spoke with pianist Lang Lang about Charlotte’s musical pursuits. Lang Lang recalled their exchange, noting that the princess had mentioned Charlotte’s interest in piano and had encouraged her to practice if she wanted to emulate accomplished musicians.

The duet added an intimate, familial note to the service, underscoring the personal traditions and talents shared within the royal family during the festive season.
