Dominic Rossa, aged 7, and Filip Rossa, aged 15, perished with their father Jaroslaw Rossa, 42, and his partner Jade McEnroe, 33.
The mother of two young boys who were tragically killed by a drunk driver on the M6 has shared her profound grief during an inquest into their deaths.
On October 15 last year, while returning from Legoland to Glasgow, Dominic Rossa, 7, his brother Filip Rossa, 15, their father Jaroslaw Rossa, 42, and Jaroslaw’s partner, Jade McEnroe, 33, all from Glasgow, died in a frontal collision near Tebay services.
Arran, 7, was the only survivor of the tragic accident and suffered severe injuries.
Kamila, the devastated mother of Filip and Dominic, recounted how her sons enjoyed playing with Jade’s son, Arran. She remembered Filip, 15, as “exceptionally bright” and excited about pursuing chemistry at the university level.
“He excelled at chess, even winning a school championship,” she continued. “I was immensely proud of him. Filip adored his dog, Daisy, and enjoyed playing Minecraft. He was very tender-hearted and loving. Losing my precious angels has left me shattered.”
Dominic, 7, was passionate about dinosaurs and aspired to adopt a penguin one day. “He was a vibrant little boy,” his mother added. “Our lives are forever altered.”, as reported by Lancashire Live.
The tragic sequence of events began when Richard Woods, 40, a former Top Gun pilot, drove his blue Skoda Fabia into the Rossa family’s Toyota Yaris. Woods, who had been at a conference in Lancashire, was nearly four times over the legal alcohol limit when he entered the motorway on the incorrect side.
As he neared Junction 39, his vehicle was seen veering onto the hard shoulder, stirring up dust, before executing a perilous U-turn and driving southbound in the northbound lane.
A partially empty bottle of gin was discovered in his vehicle.
One driver, who narrowly missed colliding with Woods’ car, called 999. “I had just seconds to react. I swerved into the next lane, narrowly missing the oncoming vehicle. It was miraculous how I avoided a collision. All I saw was a blue blur as it passed,” he stated.
Moments later, Woods’ vehicle struck the family’s car, which erupted in flames.
A passerby managed to rescue Jade’s son Arran from the backseat. “I could hear screams from inside the car,” he told the police. “Using a car jack, I broke the rear window. I saw a little boy in the back, seemingly caught by his seatbelt, yet still alive.”
Arran was subsequently airlifted to a hospital in Newcastle for treatment.
The severity of the fire required that the family members be identified through DNA testing and personal items. Jaroslaw was identified by DNA and surveillance footage from Legoland, Jade by a sample from her mother, and the boys through DNA samples from their mother and a toothbrush.
Marie, Jade’s mother, expressed her ongoing sorrow in a statement: “I miss Jade every day. I grapple with various emotions and seek answers. Some days are filled with anger and pain. Arran gives us strength to carry on every day.”
The inquest is expected to reach its conclusion today.
