Health professionals are investigating a series of suspected drug-related deaths in Glasgow, which may involve contaminated crack cocaine.

Several individuals have fallen critically ill, with some fatalities reported, following suspected consumption of drugs believed to be crack cocaine.

Symptoms observed in the affected individuals include sudden unconsciousness, respiratory distress, and collapse, along with vomiting and seizures.

The health authorities have identified that some of these incidents may be due to the crack cocaine being adulterated with a synthetic type of cannabis known as “spice,” although other harmful substances might also be involved.

They noted that synthetic cannabinoids are highly unpredictable and can be lethal even in minute quantities, potentially leading to convulsions, loss of consciousness, or death.

Earlier this month, emergency services were dispatched to Cambridge Street on a Tuesday evening following reports of a group of individuals experiencing severe distress. Upon arrival, a 52-year-old man was declared deceased at the scene.

Additionally, a 38-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man received on-site medical attention, while a 37-year-old man was urgently transported to the hospital.

It was later confirmed that these incidents were linked to the ingestion of crack cocaine.

In response to these events, NHSGGC and the Glasgow City Alcohol and Drug Partnership have updated their guidance for drug users and providers to help prevent further harm from contaminated drugs.

A collaborative team has also been established to oversee the ongoing health investigation and coordinate responses to this issue.

Dr. Daniel Carter, a public health consultant with NHSGGC, expressed condolences to those who have lost loved ones due to drug use and urged individuals using drugs, including crack cocaine, to seek support from drug services and adhere to harm reduction strategies to ensure their safety.

Further details about the incident were provided by a police spokesperson, who noted that emergency services responded to a distress call on Cambridge Street in Glasgow around 8:10 PM on a Monday, where they found a group of individuals in a severe state. A 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, and his family has been notified. A 37-year-old man was hospitalized in stable condition, while a 38-year-old woman and another 52-year-old man were treated at the location.
