Grammy-Winning Artist Billy Strings Faces Personal Tragedy

The world of country music holds its breath as Billy Strings, a prominent figure in the bluegrass genre, announces the death of his mother. During a performance in Lexington, Kentucky, the 32-year-old artist shared the sorrowful news that his mother, Debra Apostol, passed away in her sleep shortly after his concert in Lansing, Michigan at the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival.

Strings recounted the events to his audience, explaining, “We traveled overnight after our performance, and I managed to get a bit of rest early this morning around 5:40 AM. I only had about three hours of sleep. My wife had to wake me with the sad news that my beautiful mother, Debra Apostol, had passed away.”

An Emotional Tribute

Clearly affected by his loss, Strings shared a poignant moment from earlier in the day. “I immediately put on my shoes and just started walking. I ended up at a small country church that seemed to draw me in. A kind lady answered when I knocked and she stayed to pray with me for some time,” he told the gathered fans.

Despite his grief, Strings made the decision to proceed with the concert that evening, believing it to be in line with his mother’s wishes. “I chose to perform tonight because I know my mom would have wanted that,” he explained. “She adored this community. She loved you all deeply and the past few years were some of her happiest, thanks to many of you here. You’ve become some of our closest friends, and I truly appreciate that. I feel like being here with you all is being with family,” he added.

Moving away from the traditional moment of silence, Strings asked the audience for a different kind of tribute. “Instead of a moment of silence, could we make some noise for my mom right now?” he requested, before bringing his band onstage and starting the show with “I’ve Just Seen the Rock of Ages.”

Support poured in for Strings via social media, with fans expressing their condolences and support. One fan commented on Instagram, “Much love to @billystrings and his family and friends and anyone having a hard time. RIP to your mom brother. She’s so damn proud of you man!!” Another added, “We love you Billy. Keeping you and your family in my prayers.”

Family and Music

A report by the Lansing State Journal noted that during his performance in Lansing, Strings was joined by his stepfather, Terry Barber, also a musician in the bluegrass scene. Strings reminisced about his parents taking him to his first bluegrass festival in Charlotte in 1997, a significant moment in his early exposure to music. Notably, his mother was absent from the Thursday performance.
