Sarah Boone Receives a 50-Year Sentence for the Murder of Her Boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr.
Sarah Boone insisted that the death of her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr., was a tragic accident resulting from a game that turned fatal. Despite her claims, the horrific nature of Jorge’s last moments came to light through videos found on Boone’s phone. Initially, she told authorities that they had been playing hide-and-seek and that she accidentally locked him in a suitcase.
As the investigation unfolded, it became apparent that Boone watched as he endured an agonizing death. The grisly scene shocked the officers who responded to the scene. They were further horrified to find footage on Boone’s phone in which she taunted Jorge while he was confined in the suitcase, knowing he was in distress.
The prosecution argued that Boone intentionally trapped Jorge Torres Jr. in the suitcase, subjected him to verbal abuse, and left him there overnight, which ultimately led to his suffocation. According to CNN, Boone found Torres lifeless the next morning and then called 911.
In February 2020, the couple was reportedly drinking and playing a game of hide-and-seek, according to State Attorney Andrew Bain. It was reported that Torres, a Florida resident, willingly climbed into the suitcase before Boone zipped it up. The idea seemed humorous at the time, and Boone believed Torres could easily get out since two of his fingers were sticking out, allowing him to unzip the suitcase from inside.
However, evidence presented during the trial included videos from Boone’s phone showing Torres desperately pleading to be let out while Boone laughed and repeatedly dismissed his pleas. According to a press release from Bain’s office, in the videos, the victim was heard saying he could not breathe and asking to be released from the suitcase, to which Boone responded with taunts such as, “That’s what you get,” and “That’s what I feel like when you cheat on me.”
During her testimony, which lasted about five hours, Boone defended her actions. When questioned by the prosecution why she did not simply unzip the suitcase, Boone stated she wanted him to understand her feelings so he could perhaps change and improve as a person. Before her sentencing, Boone spoke about the abuse she had endured from Torres, portraying herself as a victim of “battered spouse syndrome” and fearing for her life, according to reports from WESH.
Boone described the abuses she suffered at the hands of Torres, including being kicked, punched, spit on, raped, stabbed, and choked. She expressed forgiveness towards herself for falling in love with someone she described as monstrous, stating that despite everything, she still loved him and had hoped for change.
During the trial, family members of the victim provided emotional impact statements. His mother, Blanca Torres, told the court that Boone not only took her son’s life but also destroyed a father, brother, and uncle. She poignantly shared how she sometimes waits by the window, hoping he would return to say, “Mom, I love you.”
Victoria Torres, Jorge’s sister, expressed that Boone caused irreversible pain. His daughter, Ana Victoria Torres, shared her daily torment, waking up screaming each morning from a nightmare, only to realize the grim reality of her father’s absence.
Requests for a new trial were made by Boone in early November, citing allegations of prosecutorial misconduct among other complaints about the trial proceedings. However, these were dismissed by Judge Michael Kraynick, who referred to the thorough review and evidence presented during the trial.
After the conviction, Boone’s lawyer stated that his client was shocked by the verdict, and her defense team was deeply disappointed, as reported by WESH.
