The Highway Code advises drivers to perform specific checks when driving in winter conditions, emphasizing the importance of preparation before setting out
All drivers are advised to conduct five essential checks during the winter season. As temperatures drop, weather conditions can worsen, posing significant risks to driving safety.
With the potential for snowy weather in the forecast, new hazards emerge that demand drivers’ attention. According to Highway Code Rule 228, it’s recommended to avoid traveling in icy or snowy conditions unless absolutely necessary.
If you must travel under such conditions, it is wise to plan additional time for your journey. The Highway Code advises, “In winter, check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey.
“Include an emergency kit with de-icer, an ice scraper, a torch, warm clothing and boots, a first aid kit, jump leads, and a shovel. Also, carry a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.”
To ensure maximum safety during your trip, Highway Code rule 229 mandates the following five checks:
- Remove all snow that could fall off and obstruct other road users.
- Confirm that your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather conditions are expected.
- Make sure that all lights are clean and that number plates are visible and readable.
- Ensure that mirrors are clear and windows are thoroughly demisted.
- Clear all snow and ice from all windows to maintain visibility.
The Highway Code emphasizes the need for extreme caution once on the road, especially on icy surfaces. These conditions significantly increase the risk of vehicle control loss, which can lead to accidents.
When possible, drive slowly in as high a gear as possible, avoiding abrupt braking. This is particularly important when navigating bends, as these are the spots where control is most likely to be lost.
