Medical Scare for William Shatner
Famed Star Trek actor William Shatner was urgently taken to the hospital on a Wednesday afternoon due to a health scare.
At 94, the renowned actor faced a sudden blood sugar complication at his residence in Los Angeles. He promptly sought help from emergency services upon noticing the symptoms, as reported by TMZ.
Best recognized for his iconic portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, Shatner was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical assessment after the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call from his home.
Upon arrival at the hospital, it was confirmed that Shatner was in stable condition and “resting comfortably.”
Recent Health Battles
Last year, the actor, also known for his role in Boston Legal, disclosed that he had been diagnosed and treated for stage 4 melanoma, a severe type of skin cancer that has potential to metastasize to various parts of the body.
In a discussion with Healio in March 2024, Shatner shared that he initially discovered a lump under his right ear. His primary care physician advised him to simply keep an eye on it and massage the area. However, persisting concerns led him to seek a second opinion a month later, which confirmed the diagnosis of stage 4 melanoma.
Reflecting on the moment of his diagnosis, Shatner recounted, “When they said ‘Stage 4,’ someone in the room apologized, as if to say it was all over for me. The way they said ‘sorry’ felt like they were telling me I was going to die soon.” He added, “They even mentioned that without effective treatment, I might only have five months.”
Fortunately, Shatner underwent successful surgery to remove the cancerous lump and attributes his recovery to the advances in immunotherapy, which helped him defeat the cancer.
Continued Adventures and Engagements
Despite his health challenges, Shatner has remained vigorously engaged in various activities. In 2021, he famously traveled to space aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin NS-18 Mission when he was 90 years old.
More recently, Shatner announced plans to attend the Space 2 Sea convention in the Galapagos Islands this November. The event will also feature notable personalities such as Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson from Nova ScienceNow and former astronaut Dr. Kathryn Sullivan.
