Veteran Comedy Star M.S. Umesh Passes Away at 80: Succumbs to Liver Cancer

The entertainment world mourns the loss of the humorous M.S. Umesh.

As reported by the Times of India, the esteemed comedic actor M.S. Umesh passed away in Bengaluru, India, on Sunday at the age of 80 due to complications from liver cancer.

M.S. Umesh, born Srikantayya Umesh on April 24, 1945, in Mysuru, Mysore, embarked on his theatrical journey at the tender age of four with Master K. Hirannaiah’s theatre company. He later joined the prestigious Gubbi Veeranna theatre group. His cinematic debut was in 1960 as the lead in the BR Panthalu-directed film Makkala Rajya.



Despite an initial slump in his career following his debut, Umesh rose to prominence with his 1977 performance in Katha Sangama. He subsequently enjoyed a prolific career, appearing in over 350 films, including notable titles like Nagara Hole, Guru Shishyaru, Anupama, Kaamana Billu, Apoorva Sangama, Shruthi Seridaaga, Golmaal Radhakrishna, and Nakkare Haalu Sakkare.

In recognition of his talent, Umesh received the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Katha Sangama in 1975. He was also honored with the Karnataka Nataka Akademy Award in 2013 for his significant contributions to theater. Up until his passing, Umesh continued to act, featuring in three films this year: Dasarahalli, Kuladalli Keelyavudo, and Kamal Sridevi. His cancer was diagnosed following a fall at his home in October.

“Umesh had a unique ability to immerse audiences in waves of laughter with his vibrant humor,” stated JD leader and Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. “He was a masterful performer in many films, including Guru Shishyaru, Haalu Jenu, and Apurva Sangama. His passing is a significant loss to the Kannada art scene.”

“Umesh was among the most gifted actors we had in the film industry,” said Shivaraj Thangadgi, Minister for Welfare of Backward Classes and Kannada and Culture, in a statement to the Deccan Herald. “It is deeply saddening that we have lost such an exceptional talent to cancer. His departure marks a great loss for the Kannada film industry.”

M.S. Umesh leaves behind a profound legacy in the Kannada cultural landscape. His impact on film and theater will be remembered for generations. While his passing is a sorrowful event, his extensive body of work continues to bring joy and laughter to many. Known for his unique voice, impeccable comic timing, and expressive demeanor, Umesh’s absence will be deeply felt in the entertainment industry.
