Unsolved Crime: Man Shot Dead in Front of His Mother, Police Baffled 20 Years Later

In 2008, Scott Buchanan was shot to death while his mother watched

The cold case of a ‘devoted son’ who was fatally shot on his own doorstep continues to elude the police nearly two decades later.

Scott Buchanan was standing in the driveway of his family home when someone approached him and fatally shot him at close range with a shotgun, causing alarm in his normally peaceful neighborhood, as reported by Birmingham Live. The 23-year-old was attacked on Callaghan Road in Tividale at approximately 10pm on a Wednesday in November 2008. The assailant escaped the scene and remains unidentified.

Despite nearly two decades having passed, the murder remains unsolved. Despite exhaustive investigations, authorities have been unable to determine a clear motive, and initial lines of inquiry have not led to any significant developments.

Investigators have analyzed nearly 1,000 witness statements in an attempt to bring Scott’s murderer to justice, but to no avail. The shooting occurred shortly after Scott’s mother, Caron, had been assaulted.

Four individuals were initially detained as part of the murder investigation but were subsequently released without charges. Speaking in 2018, on the 10th anniversary of her son’s death, Caron reiterated that “nothing can ever alleviate the pain of losing Scott, and not a day passes without him being in our thoughts.

“He had his whole life ahead of him, and although I am now a grandmother, I often wonder if I would have been a grandmother to his children as well. Being near him when it happened, yet being utterly powerless to stop it, is something that will haunt me forever.”
