NBC has reportedly stepped up protective measures for its employees after the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie.
Several insiders told The U.S. Sun that executives behind the Today program have increased police and security coverage at the morning show’s studio. The move, sources say, was taken to protect on-air personalities and crew members and is meant to be precautionary.
A source described the atmosphere at the studio as tense and said that, for that reason, NBC has beefed up security around its talent. The network has also coordinated with the New York Police Department to ensure staff safety, the source added.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen by relatives on Saturday at about 9:45 p.m. at her residence in Tucson, Arizona. Her family reported her missing the next day around midday after someone from her church called to say she had not attended services that morning.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that he believes Nancy was taken against her will.
On Tuesday’s episode of Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, co-anchor Sheinelle Jones admitted that staff members are still unsettled while they continue to follow and report on the case.
Jones said the team is shaken but aware of their professional responsibilities, noting that the people who work on the show feel like a family and that the situation has left many of them rattled.
She added that several colleagues have had trouble sleeping since the news broke. Jones said she woke up feeling anxious and that the first thing she saw on her phone was Savannah Guthrie’s heartfelt request on social media asking for prayers and support.
Jones described feeling calmed by Guthrie’s message, saying it served as a reminder of their shared values. She said that seeing Savannah’s faith in such a difficult moment encouraged everyone to offer their support and prayers.
