Craig Ferguson, 22, sets out from Los Angeles to Boston on a mission to support mental health initiatives

An advocate for mental health has embarked on a significant journey from Glasgow to the United States, where he plans to traverse 3,000 miles to gather funds for a charitable cause. On a Saturday, Craig Ferguson left Glasgow Airport for an ambitious walk from Los Angeles to Boston.

Before his departure, a 22-year-old Tartan Army fanatic received a grand farewell, complete with bagpipes, courtesy of Glasgow Taxis at the airport. Ferguson’s remarkable journey, dubbed the “Tartan Trek,” is set to begin on Tuesday, February 24, from Santa Monica Pier.

Over the course of 104 days, Ferguson aims to walk the distance of a marathon each day, donned in a kilt, with a goal to raise £1 million for the Scottish Association for Mental Health. His route will take him past several iconic American landmarks, including the Las Vegas Strip and Monument Valley.

Ferguson is scheduled to arrive in Boston by June 14, just in time for Scotland’s first game in the World Cup. Accompanying him through this extensive challenge is his best friend, Matt Allan, who will manage the support vehicle, providing assistance throughout the journey.

The duo, friends since the age of five, are no strangers to enduring tough challenges together. Previously, Ferguson undertook a walk from Glasgow to Munich, successfully raising over £80,000 for men’s mental health, a precursor to the upcoming Euro 2024.

Discussing his upcoming challenge, Ferguson shared, “This is undoubtedly the most significant challenge I’ve ever faced, but mental health impacts every family in Scotland, including mine. If walking 3,000 miles in a kilt can initiate conversation, encourage donations, and help people seek support, then every step of the way will be worthwhile. My aim is to not only cross America but to make a substantial difference back home.”

Hazel McIlwraith from SAMH expressed gratitude, saying, “We are extremely thankful to Craig for undertaking such a remarkable challenge in support of SAMH. The funds raised from the Tartan Trek will be crucial in allowing us to continue providing vital mental health services throughout Scotland. During times when the demand for such services is on the rise, efforts like these can be life-saving.”
