Officials describe the catastrophic train crash in southern Spain as ‘highly unusual’
The number of fatalities from a severe train crash in southern Spain has unfortunately escalated.
Two high-speed trains collided on Sunday, January 18th, initially resulting in 21 deaths and over 100 injuries. Recent reports now indicate that the death toll has reached 39.
The train, traveling from Malaga to Madrid, derailed near Cordoba, confirmed by the railway operator Adif. The other train was en route from Madrid to Huelva. It is estimated that around 500 passengers were on board both trains at the time of the incident.
The collision was particularly violent, with reports from passengers of hearing others “screaming” and “calling for doctors.” The regional health minister for Andalucia, where the accident occurred, mentioned that at least one passenger carriage had fallen down a 13-foot slope.
Spain’s Transport Minister, Óscar Puente, explained that the derailment of the first two carriages of the Alvia train was primarily responsible for the high number of fatalities and injuries.
It has been confirmed that 75 individuals have been hospitalized, with 15 in critical or serious condition.
Mr. Puente expressed that railway experts are deeply perplexed by the circumstances of the crash, describing it as “highly unusual.” An investigation into the incident has already begun.
Furthermore, he disclosed that the train which derailed was less than four years old, owned by the private company Iryo. The other train involved, which sustained significant damage, is operated by Spain’s public train company, Renfe.
Cordoba’s Chief Firefighter, Francisco Carmona, reported that one of the trains was severely twisted, with at least four carriages derailed.
The Spanish Royal Family has sent their condolences, stating, “We are closely following the grave accident between two high-speed trains in Adamuz. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who have perished, as well as our hopes for a swift recovery to those injured.”
Due to the accident, high-speed train services will not operate on Monday, January 19th, between Madrid and several cities including Córdoba, Sevilla, Málaga, Granada, and Huelva.
Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has also spoken about the ‘tragic railway accident,’ offering his condolences. He stated, “Tonight is a night of profound sorrow for our country due to the tragic railway accident in Adamuz. I extend my sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
“No words can ease such immense pain, but please know that the entire nation is with you during this incredibly tough time. All emergency services are tirelessly working in coordination.”
