A Scottish university student recently recounted the distressing incident of her father collapsing while speaking to her on the phone.

Twenty-year-old Aimee Halstead was about to participate in her first 10k at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival on May 25. Her parents were on their way from Bathgate, West Lothian, to support her, and she was already feeling anxious.

As she was heading to the starting line, she phoned her parents only to hear that her dad had suddenly collapsed. Realizing that her mother was serious, Aimee found herself at a loss for what to do next.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Aimee explained her dilemma: “I was continuously texting my mum, unsure whether to start the race or abandon it to find my parents.”

“My mum insisted I run the race, claiming everything was under control. They were unsure which hospital they would end up at, so she promised to update me afterwards,” she added.

Her father was urgently taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he was diagnosed with aortic stenosis—a severe condition that necessitated open heart surgery.

Aimee described the ordeal as a “frightening and emotional period” for her and her family.

She met her family later at the hospital, where doctors informed her of her dad’s condition. “Most people have three heart valves, but it turned out my dad had only two since birth. He was also a runner, and over time, his condition had deteriorated, leading to this emergency,” she shared.

“He underwent several procedures before the doctors concluded that open heart surgery was the only solution. It was terrifying to hear that if this had remained undiagnosed for another month or so, we might have lost him,” Aimee continued.

The situation was so sudden and shocking, especially when thinking about the potential outcomes had he not collapsed when he did.

Despite her worries, Aimee completed the race, though she admitted it was a challenging experience, constantly torn between concern for her dad and completing her first race. “The moment I crossed the finish line, my initial joy was immediately overshadowed by concern for my dad’s condition,” she explained.

After the race, navigating the closed roads made it difficult for her to quickly reunite with her family, adding to the day’s stress.

Now, Aimee plans to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation in honor of her dad, aiming to both support a meaningful cause and make her father proud.

She emphasized, “This terrifying experience has only deepened my commitment to supporting heart health awareness and fundraising.”

Aimee’s fundraising initiative is a heartfelt tribute to her father’s ongoing battle and a step towards helping others facing similar challenges.
