82-year-old Andrew David Kenneth Young from Perthshire was among the three British nationals who perished in the catastrophic derailment of Lisbon’s Glória funicular.
A Scottish elderly man has been identified as one of the 16 individuals who died in a horrific funicular railway accident in Portugal that resulted in the deaths of three Britons.
Andrew David Kenneth Young, aged 82, originally from Auchterarder, Perthshire, was confirmed dead following the derailment of the Glória funicular in Lisbon, which crashed into a nearby structure on Wednesday, September 3.
Known affectionately as Dave by friends and family, the retired customs officer had been residing in Holyhead, Anglesey since 1980, maintaining his Scottish connections throughout his life.
He was among the three British citizens who lost their lives in this tragic event, which also injured nearly two dozen others.
According to a release from North Wales Police, his family expressed that although Andrew David Kenneth Young, who went by Dave, grew up in Auchterarder, Perthshire, he later moved to Holyhead in 1980 where he pursued a lengthy career as a customs officer.
“He was a passionate transport enthusiast and spent his retirement visiting heritage railways and tramways globally. His family takes solace in knowing that his last moments were spent doing what he loved, bringing him immense joy,” the statement read.
Mr. Young’s life tragically ended alongside British couple Kayleigh Gillian Smith, 36, and William Nelson, 44, from Cheshire, who were just starting their vacation in Lisbon.
Portuguese authorities confirmed on Friday that the identities of all victims had been established.
The casualties include five Portuguese nationals, three Britons, two Canadians, two South Koreans, an American, a French national, a Swiss citizen, and a Ukrainian.
North Wales Police have dispatched specialist officers to provide support to Mr. Young’s bereaved family, who have requested privacy during this difficult time.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his deep sorrow over the deaths. A spokesperson from Downing Street also stated: “The Prime Minister’s thoughts are with the families and all those affected by this devastating event. We are in solidarity with Portugal during this challenging period.”
