Darren McDade receives an eight-year prison sentence.
Darren McDade, aged 34, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of killing a beloved NHS worker with scissors.
This tragic incident occurred inside the victim’s apartment in south Glasgow on July 22, 2023, where McDade attacked 29-year-old Kyle Zybilowicz.
The court was informed about McDade’s extensive attempts to avoid arrest by disposing of the murder weapon and incinerating his clothes.
During the trial, McDade confessed to causing Zybilowicz’s death but claimed he acted in self-defense, fearing for his own life during the altercation.
McDade recounted how Zybilowicz had aggressively bitten him and attempted to grab the scissors first, prompting him to react defensively, although he could not recall the exact number of times he struck Zybilowicz.
Initially charged with murder, McDade was ultimately convicted of culpable homicide under provocation at the High Court in Glasgow.
The sentencing took place remotely via video link at the High Court in Edinburgh, presided over by Lord Scott.
During the sentencing, Lord Scott highlighted the profound grief and lasting trauma expressed by Zybilowicz’s family in their statements. He remarked on the deep void left by his death, particularly mentioning his three nieces who will now grow up without knowing their uncle.
“No sentence I impose could possibly compensate for the loss of a deeply cherished son, brother, uncle, and co-worker,” Lord Scott stated as he delivered the eight-year prison term.
Leading up to the tragic event, McDade had spent the evening with a friend, including visits to a local casino.
He had been in communication with Zybilowicz regarding a casual sexual encounter despite never having met him before. McDade claimed that their meeting was actually intended to buy cocaine, not for a hookup.
Upon arriving at Zybilowicz’s apartment in Dumbreck Court, McDade described an immediate escalation to physical confrontation, leading to the fatal stabbing.
In his testimony, McDade detailed how he managed to grab the scissors during a struggle after Zybilowicz bit him and reached for the weapon. According to McDade, his actions were a desperate bid for survival.
Following the altercation, McDade fled the scene, later discarding the weapon and Zybilowicz’s mobile phone, actions he claimed were driven by panic and fear.
He also sought to erase any traces of the crime by burning his clothing at a remote location after purchasing flammable materials.
Despite his later claims of shock and devastation upon learning of Zybilowicz’s death through social media, McDade’s actions post-incident suggest a calculated attempt to evade justice.
The trial also shed light on the victim’s character, remembered fondly by friends as humorous and well-loved within his community.
In conclusion, Lord Scott commended Zybilowicz’s family for their composed and respectful presence throughout the judicial proceedings.
