The esteemed British writer Dame Jilly Cooper passed away on October 5 following a fall, at the age of 88.
The renowned author of The Rutshire Chronicles, who also recently took on the role of executive producer for the Disney+ series based on her 1998 book Rivals, is mourned as a beacon of joy and love by her children, Felix and Emily.
“Our mother was a beacon of light in our lives. Her profound affection for her family and friends was limitless,” they expressed in a tribute reported by The Hollywood Reporter. “Her passing was utterly unexpected and has left us in shock. We are immensely proud of her accomplishments and cannot fathom our lives without her vibrant smile and laughter.”
Felicity Blunt, Cooper’s agent for many years, reflected on her career as a privilege, stating, “It has been a privilege to work with a woman who has influenced culture, literature, and dialogue ever since her first publication more than half a century ago.”
“Jilly will forever be synonymous with her bestselling series The Rutshire Chronicles and its charismatic, trouble-stirring equestrian protagonist Rupert Campbell-Black,” Blunt continued. “It’s unexpected that novels often labeled as ‘bonkbusters’ would remain relevant over time, yet Jilly’s writing was perceptive and profound, covering a wide range of topics such as class, sex, marriage, competition, sorrow, and fertility.”
“Her narratives were complex and bold,” Blunt added, “marked by sharp insights and a mischievous sense of humor. Jilly often drew from her own life for inspiration, offering critiques of societal norms and prejudices with a wit reminiscent of Jane Austen. However, she modestly dismissed such comparisons, saying her writing was simply aimed ‘to add to the sum of human happiness.’ In this mission, she was truly unparalleled as an author.”
In the last years of her life, Cooper dedicated her efforts to the role of executive producer on Rivals, which debuted in October 2024 featuring stars like David Tennant, Alex Hassell, Bella Maclean, Emily Atack, Danny Dyer, Katherine Parkinson, and Nafessa Williams.
“Jilly’s contributions to the storyline and dialogue significantly enhanced the scripts, and her presence on set brought joy to both the cast and crew,” Blunt remarked about Cooper’s involvement in Rivals. “With her emotional intelligence, immense generosity, keen observation, and delightful personality, Jilly Cooper will be greatly missed by everyone at Curtis Brown and on the set of Rivals. I’ve not only lost a friend but also an ally, a confidante, and a mentor. Yet, I am confident that her legacy will endure through her words, both in print and on screen.”
