Popular ABC TV Celebrity Stages Comeback Following Battle with Cancer

Fans of General Hospital were treated to an unexpected return of Robert Scorpio, just a day after the actor Tristan Rogers revealed his cancer diagnosis.

Since 1980, Rogers has intermittently portrayed Scorpio on the ABC drama series. He made a comeback in a single episode on July 18, which coincided with the conclusion of a storyline involving his on-screen daughter, Sasha Gilmore, portrayed by Sofia Mattsson, who was also exiting the series.

In an interview with TV Insider, Mattsson expressed that sharing her last day on set with Rogers made the experience memorable.

“It was truly special because we rarely film scenes in sequence, but my final scenes that went on air were actually shot last,” Mattsson told the publication. “It was particularly meaningful that they were with Tristan. I cherished how heartwarming those scenes turned out,” she added.

On July 17, Rogers disclosed through a spokesperson that he had been diagnosed with cancer, although he did not specify his prognosis.

“At this challenging time, while he remains optimistic and is actively coordinating with his doctors on his treatment strategy, Tristan and his family are experiencing significant emotional and physical strains,” the representative of the 79-year-old Emmy-winning actor stated. “The family requests privacy and understanding as they navigate this period. They appreciate the overwhelming support and love from their friends and family,” the rep added.

“Tristan extends his gratitude to his fans, acknowledging how much he values their steadfast support and words of encouragement throughout the years,” the statement continued. “Their support is incredibly important to him now more than ever. He and his family will share further updates if they feel it’s appropriate,” the statement read.

Rogers has a rich history in soap operas, having portrayed Colin Atkinson on The Young and the Restless from 2010 to 2019 until his character’s off-screen death. His other appearances include roles on The Bold and the Beautiful, The Bay, Studio City, and Family Law, in addition to voice roles in animations such as The Rescuers Down Under, The Wild Thornberrys, Batman Beyond, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, and The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest.
