The escalation follows the EU’s criticism of a ‘gross’ airspace violation after Russian jets entered Estonia without authorization on Friday.
NATO warplanes were once again mobilized following another close brush with Russian military aircraft.
The Polish military command announced that it, along with its allies, scrambled jets in response to a large-scale assault on Ukraine that approached the EU’s borders.
This is not the first instance of Poland having to react to Russian military aggression during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, marking the second such occurrence within just two days.
In response to the threat, Poland activated its air defense systems to their maximum readiness, according to an announcement on X, as reported by the Mirror.
The defense authorities stated, “Polish and allied aircraft are now patrolling our airspace, while our ground-based air defense and radar systems are at full operational readiness.”
Following a significant overnight offensive on Ukraine, the air operation was concluded after Russian airstrikes ceased around 5am BST. The action was described as “preventative and designed to secure airspace near the conflict zone,” which had been targeted with over 600 drones and missiles.
Ukraine’s military headquarters reported that within a 24-hour period, there were 165 engagements with Russian forces, with alerts issued across virtually all regions of Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Air Force disclosed that during the latest assault, Russia deployed 619 drones and missiles, including 579 drones, eight ballistic missiles, and 32 cruise missiles. Authorities successfully intercepted and neutralized the majority of these threats — 552 drones, two ballistic missiles, and 29 cruise missiles.
During the air raid, tactical aircraft, particularly F-16 fighters, effectively targeted the enemy’s cruise missiles, once again proving the effectiveness of Western military technology on the battlefield.
Following an audacious violation of Estonian airspace on Friday, where two MiG-31 jets entered without authorization and lingered for 12 minutes over the Gulf of Finland, jets were deployed from Italy, Sweden, and Finland. A NATO spokesperson characterized the incident as “yet another example of reckless Russian behavior and NATO’s capacity to respond quickly.”
Kristen Michal, the Prime Minister of Estonia, emphasized that the military alliance’s response to any provocation must be “united and strong,” advocating for consultations with allies to maintain a common situational awareness and to coordinate further collective actions.
The incursion drew sharp criticism from US President Donald Trump, who commented on Friday, “I don’t love it. I don’t like when that happens. Could be big trouble.”
