Nate Bargatze’s Controversial Emmys Night

At the 77th Emmy Awards, Nate Bargatze left the audience perplexed and somewhat frustrated with his unconventional method designed to expedite the evening’s proceedings.

As the host, Bargatze began the night with an announcement that he would contribute $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America by the end of the event. However, there was a twist: for every second an acceptance speech exceeded 45 seconds, $1,000 would be subtracted from the total donation for each additional second.

The tension among the winners was palpable as a large display visually counted down the donation amount with each passing second over the limit, causing distress among those on stage. By the latter part of the evening, audible dissatisfaction emerged from the audience whenever the display was shown.

Bargatze commented on the situation during the event, stating, “That’s tough, it’s brutal. What are you gonna do, though? I can’t change it—this is a game I made up and these are the rules.”

The response on social media was overwhelmingly negative, with viewers describing the strategy as “awful” and “dreadful.” One viewer likened the scenario to a disturbing scene from HBO’s Succession, where a character cruelly revokes a promised monetary reward from a child.

As the evening progressed, the situation reached a point where the meter displayed negative figures, indicating that many winners had chosen to ignore the time restriction or openly criticized its absurdity. Comedian John Oliver notably began his acceptance speech with a direct expletive aimed at Bargatze.

In a turn of events, however, Bargatze revealed he would be adding an additional $250,000 of his personal funds towards the donation, and CBS also contributed $100,000. Lisa Anastasi, the chief development and external relations officer for the Boys & Girls Club, expressed gratitude, calling it a “generous surprise.”

Anastasi highlighted the significance of the donation, saying, “The $350,000 donation will be incredibly impactful to our programs and in the lives of kids and teens who attend our Clubs. But this moment was about more than the donation for us — it was also special because it placed our mission and our Club Kids on a national stage.”
