Iconic British Comedy Actress Prunella Scales Passes Away at 93

Prunella Scales, celebrated for her role in the British sitcom Fawlty Towers, passed away at the age of 93 on Monday.

The famed actress, renowned for her portrayal of the hotel manager Sybil Fawlty during the show’s run in 1975 and 1979, “died peacefully at home in London yesterday,” her sons, Samuel and Joseph, confirmed in a statement.

“Our beloved mother Prunella Scales passed away peacefully at her London residence yesterday. She was 93,” they shared with PA News agency, as reported by the BBC. They spoke about their mother, who had been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013, saying, “Despite dementia ending her impressive nearly 70-year acting career, she continued to reside at her home.”

The sons of Scales also mentioned that she spent her last day watching Fawlty Towers. They expressed their gratitude towards those who cared for her in her final days, saying, “We are immensely thankful to everyone who provided such exceptional care for Pru in her last days; she was comfortable, content, and surrounded by love.”

Prunella Scales is preceded in death by her husband, actor Timothy West, who died in November 2024 at age 90. She leaves behind two sons, a stepdaughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Following the news of Scales’ death, her Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese, who played her on-screen husband Basil, praised her as “a truly remarkable comic actress.”

Cleese remarked, “It’s profoundly sad. Watching various clips of Fawlty Towers recently for a book project, I was reminded just how flawless her performances were scene after scene. Pru was also an incredibly kind person, frequently seen apologizing, which became a running joke between us. I cherished her deeply.”

Scales initially rose to prominence in the 1960s with the sitcom Marriage Lines, and her career included many performances in West End theatre productions. Noteworthy among these was her 1991 role in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, alongside her husband. Her other notable works include After Henry, The Lonely Passion Of Judith Hearne, and Consuming Passions.

In their later years, Scales and West enjoyed a resurgence in popularity with the Channel 4 series Great Canal Journeys, which captured the couple exploring various canals.

“We never imagined it would capture the audience’s interest as it did,” West commented in a 2023 BBC interview.

Discussing his wife’s dementia, West said in the same interview, “It’s constantly on our minds. We’ve become accustomed to it, and people are very understanding and sympathetic. Pru doesn’t dwell on it much.” He confidently added that their relationship remained strong despite the diagnosis, saying, “Our relationship hasn’t changed at all. We know things will shift slightly, but so far, we’ve managed quite well.”
