Fans of James Van Der Beek have been expressing grief after the former Dawson’s Creek actor died Wednesday morning at the age of 48, following a battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer.
After his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, shared an Instagram post announcing that her husband “passed peacefully,” many followers filled the post’s comments with messages of sympathy and remembrance.
One admirer wrote that they were devastated — not only for James but for his loved ones and for everyone who grew up watching him as Dawson and in his many other parts over the years — and offered wishes that his memory bring comfort, especially to his wife and children. Another commenter said they were openly crying, calling him a wonderful person, an outstanding actor and a devoted father, and added that a piece of many people’s youth has been lost, bidding “goodbye” to the character so many remember.
Other fans described the news as truly heartbreaking and praised the courage he showed in his fight, saying his family would be in many people’s prayers. Several people also noted his advocacy around cancer awareness, commending his bravery and efforts to speak publicly about symptoms and early detection.
In her Instagram message Kimberly wrote that James David Van Der Beek died peacefully that morning and that he faced his final days with bravery, faith and dignity. She indicated there is more she will share in time about his wishes, his compassion for others and his reverence for the time he had, but asked for privacy now as the family mourns their husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Although a formal cause of death has not been released, Van Der Beek had been diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer in 2023. He had planned to take part in a Dawson’s Creek reunion last September but had to withdraw for health reasons and participated only via a virtual appearance.
The actor, a father of six who made his diagnosis public in November 2024, spoke with TODAY’s Craig Melvin in December about how the illness had deepened his spiritual life. He said that prior to his diagnosis he had tried to make room for faith in his life, but the experience of cancer shifted his perspective — he now feels that connecting with a sense of God, or whatever that force may be, is central to why we’re here, and that caring for our relationships is a way of connecting to that larger love.
