A tribute screening of Diane Keaton’s work in Santa Monica was notably missing its key guest.
On Sunday evening, Nancy Meyers, the director of Something’s Gotta Give, unexpectedly withdrew from a highly anticipated appearance where she was scheduled to lead a panel discussion about the film. This marked Meyers’ first intended public engagement since Keaton’s passing on October 11.
American Cinematheque, the organization responsible for the event, issued a last-minute announcement to attendees. The film screening was held at the Aero Theatre located in Santa Monica.
Something’s Gotta Give features Keaton in a complicated romantic entanglement with two men, portrayed by Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves. The film is celebrated as one of the finest romantic comedies ever produced, earning Keaton an Oscar nomination for Best Actress following its 2003 release.
Following Keaton’s death, Meyers posted a heartfelt homage to her on Instagram, reflecting on their nearly four decades of friendship.
“As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years – at times over those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of,” Meyers expressed. “We all search for that someone who really gets us, right? Well, with Diane, I believe we mutually had that. I always felt she really got me so writing for her made me better because I felt so secure in her hands.”
Meyers also acknowledged Keaton’s humorous presence extended beyond her own films, citing Keaton’s iconic roles under directors like Warren Beatty and Woody Allen.
“Diane did exactly the same for them because that is what she does. She goes deep. And I know those who have worked with her know what I know… she made everything better,” Meyers noted. “She was like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her — changed my life. Thank you Di. I’ll miss you forever.”
