Just a fortnight before walking down the aisle, Jon Gosselin was confronted with an unexpected medical emergency. The Jon & Kate Plus 8 alum told the Daily Mail that a health crisis hit him in the lead-up to his November 2025 wedding to Stephanie Lebo.
He described the first symptom as intense pain in his leg that felt relentless, and said the discomfort had moved up into his shoulder by the next day. The situation escalated when, during a severe coughing episode that night, he expelled a slimy substance that he likened to putty.
Gosselin drove himself to the emergency room, where imaging — including an MRI and an ultrasound — revealed two pulmonary embolisms affecting both lungs. According to the Mayo Clinic, a pulmonary embolism happens when a blood clot lodges in a lung artery and cuts off blood supply to part of the lung; when clots are present in arteries on both sides, it’s considered bilateral.
He said his current regimen includes medications for his heart and blood pressure, aspirin, and the anticoagulant Eliquis to prevent further clotting. Gosselin acknowledged the severity of the episode, noting that had he ignored the symptoms and stayed home that night, the outcome could have been fatal.
Two of his eight children and his then-fiancée were reportedly alarmed and very frightened by the incident. While he has since regained his health, he is now contending with substantial medical bills as a consequence of the emergency.
Gosselin explained that reviewing an itemized hospital bill reveals detailed procedure codes for every service provided. He has worked with someone named Strauss to go through the paperwork and decipher the healthcare billing codes tied to each major entry.
Having that assistance has been valuable, he said, because Strauss could interpret what each code meant and then ask whether he actually underwent a particular procedure — questions he sometimes didn’t have answers to because the medical staff hadn’t fully explained what was done.
Gosselin was previously married to Kate Gosselin, and their relationship — as well as the dissolution of their marriage — was featured on the TLC reality series. Their fallout and subsequent battles over custody and other issues have continued to attract attention.
