Tina Knowles Shares Her Battle with Breast Cancer

Tina Knowles has recently spoken about her personal battle with breast cancer.

In a revealing interview with PEOPLE that was published on Tuesday, the 71-year-old mother to celebrities Beyoncé and Solange Knowles expressed her shock when she was diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer in her left breast last July.

Although initially hesitant about making her diagnosis public due to her private nature, Tina chose to discuss her experience in her upcoming memoir titled Matriarch. She believes her story contains valuable insights for other women. “I felt there were many lessons that could be learned from my journey,” she explained.

Tina emphasized the importance of regular mammogram screenings. She advised, “We, as women, often get caught up in our daily activities and responsibilities, but it is crucial to make time for your health screenings.” She reflected on her own experience, noting, “If I hadn’t gotten my screening done early, I hate to think what might have happened.”

She recounted missing a mammogram appointment due to a scheduling mishap exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. “I was supposed to have a mammogram, but it was canceled due to the outbreak, and I mistakenly thought it had been rescheduled. It’s something you can’t afford to overlook,” she stated.

Upon learning of their mother’s cancer diagnosis, Beyoncé and Solange reacted supportively. Tina describes in Matriarch how Beyoncé remained optimistic and focused, treating the diagnosis like a challenge to be met with precision. Solange reassured her by saying, “Mom, we are going to take care of this.”

Last year, Tina underwent surgery to remove the tumor along with a breast reduction procedure. She now reports that she is doing wonderfully and is grateful to be cancer-free. “I am incredibly blessed that I discovered it early,” she said.

Tina’s current focus is on inspiring others and appreciating every moment. “What frightens me now is the thought of not fully embracing each day I have left,” she shared. Her aim in sharing her story is to offer hope and demonstrate that it’s possible to face cancer and still lead a vibrant life. “I want to show others that you can experience this and still thrive,” she affirmed.
