Industry actress Marisa Abela has recently shared details about her health journey following her thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2020.
The British actress, now in remission, revealed in a recent interview with The Sunday Times that, despite being in the clear, she will need lifelong medication due to the absence of a functioning thyroid. Abela, who was diagnosed at the young age of 23, is now 29 and remains vigilant about her health. “The pills I take essentially act as my thyroid,” she explained. “I’m committed to never skipping my medical appointments because managing my hormone levels is crucial, especially as a woman, to ensure everything functions properly.”
Abela underwent a rigorous treatment regimen after her diagnosis, involving an eight-hour surgery and subsequent radioactive iodine therapy, as she recounted in an October 2024 interview with The Times of London.
Describing her treatment, she shared an unusual anecdote: “It’s surreal. You’re handed a glowing, neon capsule by a nuclear physicist dressed like an astronaut. Once you ingest it, a technician checks your radiation levels with a device from a distance, confirming it’s safe before hastily exiting the room. It leaves you in disbelief, questioning how such a procedure could seem so routine.”
The recovery process was particularly challenging for Abela. She recalled her distress upon first seeing her reflection post-surgery, noting her neck was “stapled and bloody.” At that moment, she feared her acting career might be over due to the prominent scar. “It was a difficult sight, and the scar is quite significant,” she admitted. “It was hard to imagine taking on any roles that didn’t feature the scar as part of the character description.”
Reflecting on her experience with cancer, Abela described it as a profound alteration in her relationship with her body, instilling a sense of distrust that was hard to reconcile. “To discover that this had been growing inside me undetected for years altered how I view my body,” she said. “I’m not one to believe everything happens for a reason. It’s not something I think anyone should endure, but it definitely reshapes your understanding of what truly matters in life and what doesn’t.”
