The world of jazz has lost one of its iconic figures, Jack DeJohnette, who passed away at the age of 83.
His wife announced that DeJohnette, renowned for his expertise as both a drummer and a pianist, succumbed to congestive heart failure last Sunday in Kingston, New York. His career was marked by significant collaborations with leading musicians such as Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock.
One of DeJohnette’s most distinguished roles was as Miles Davis’ drummer of choice during Davis’ electric phase. He played a crucial role in the production of the 1969 album Bitches Brew, a pivotal work in the jazz fusion movement and widely regarded as one of the greatest albums ever made.
In addition to his collaborative efforts, DeJohnette had a prolific solo career. He was the leading artist or band leader on more than 35 albums, showcasing his versatility and influence in the jazz world.
Throughout his extensive career, DeJohnette also recorded with other prominent artists including Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Alice Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett, John Abercrombie, Michael Brecker, and John Scofield, among others.
His exceptional talent was recognized with multiple Grammy nominations; he won two of these prestigious awards. In 2009, he received the Best New Age Album Grammy for his synthesizer-based album Peace Time, and in 2022, he was awarded the Best Jazz Instrumental Album for Skyline.
Reflecting on his musical philosophy, DeJohnette once remarked during his 2012 NEA Jazz Master induction, “The best gift that I have is the ability to listen. Not just listen with the ears, but with the heart as well.”
