“Desecrating graves, a sanctuary for remembrance and sorrow, by such heartless acts is utterly despicable.”

A local resident has expressed her outrage after vandals ignited trash at a Glasgow cemetery, resulting in charred rubbish covering several graves, in what she described as a “barbaric and appalling act”.

The resident, who resides near Riddrie Park Cemetery in the eastern part of the city, was appalled to see firefighters dousing a fire amid the tombstones last weekend.

She reported that the troublemakers seemingly gathered waste from nearby bins before setting it on fire within the municipal cemetery, leaving the area littered with burnt remnants.

In an interview with Glasgow Live, the woman, who preferred to stay anonymous, recounted: “We were passing by the cemetery on Sunday evening when we noticed the fire service managing a fire. It appeared that someone had set alight some discarded rubbish right in the middle of the cemetery.”

The situation worsened when she noticed piles of waste dumped on multiple graves, which caused a stir among the local populace.

She commented: “This is one of the most cruel and inhuman acts imaginable — violating graves in a place designed for grief and tranquility. It’s simply reprehensible.”

Scorched debris

Images captured at the scene depict scorched waste strewn across burial plots, with the nearby grass neglected and overgrown — a sight the woman claims is becoming increasingly common.

She criticized Glasgow City Council for allowing the cemetery to deteriorate, stating: “The area is unkempt — the grass is seldom mowed, dog feces are everywhere, and illegal dumping is a frequent issue. Now, we are even seeing fires being set. It’s disgraceful.”

She is urgently calling for action, including consistent maintenance, locking the cemetery gates at night, and conducting a thorough cleanup.

“This is hallowed ground — a place for mourning. It must be safeguarded, not neglected,” she emphasized.

Glasgow City Council acknowledged the incident after it was brought to their attention earlier this week, although it was not reported directly to them at the time.

A council spokesperson stated: “The recent incident of illegal dumping in Riddrie Cemetery was not directly reported to us. Nonetheless, our staff addressed the situation appropriately when they visited the site on Wednesday this week.”

“Dumping waste in any location is intolerable, but doing so in a cemetery, a place where people come to honor and mourn their loved ones, is a particularly vile form of antisocial behavior,” they added.
